Regarding Guitar String Gauges For Guitarists
One thing that a large amount of beginner musicians miss when they’re starting to learn to play guitar is discovering the correct guitar string gauges for their individual musical style.
It’s OK, you’re not alone. It took me quite a while to discover the most suitable guitar string gauges for my guitar style. Sometimes it can even work to mix guitar string gauges depending on the kind of music you’re playing at any particular time. It can also be a bit daunting when folk say things like ‘Oh, I use tens most of the time’ and you are not sure what they mean.
When you have started to develop your individual style, you may well decide that the strings you have on your guitar right now aren’t right for the rigours of your playing. Changing your strings for different guitar string gauges can make all of the difference here. For example, if you play soft, thoughtful songs then you are possibly going to be okay with lighter strings, but for harder, heavier music you’ll need something more resilient that may face up to the punishment.
Guitar string gauges are straightforward to understand once you have grasped the basic idea. A great start is to go along to your local guitar emporium and take a look at the various brands of of strings that are available.
Ernie Ball is the most well liked brand of guitar strings, and quite properly so. Have a look at the combinations of string gauges they sell in their luridly coloured packs. Those numbers are a good indicator as to the strength of the strings that you’ll be looking for.
Personally, as a speed metal guitarist who generally tunes down to C, I usually use Ernie Ball ‘Skinny Top Heavy Bottom’ strings. These packs feature these particular guitar string gauges : 10, 13, 17, 42 and 52, and are fantastic for heavier playing, with stringer sustain and a good deal more control over individual notes when downtuned.
That is the basic idea. Find what works best for your playing style and you’ll be stunned at how much you’re feeling as though your guitar playing has improved. With the most fitting guitar string gauges on your instrument, you can jam much more easily and comfortably while learning to play guitar.
